JOIN US FOR YOUR MUSIC THERAPY INTERNSHIP

Applicants for the internship position at Music To Grow On should have a genuine passion and desire to work with individuals with varying levels of ability ranging from early childhood to older adults.

  • Repertoire and Proficiency: Interns are expected to have a repertoire of music that is age-appropriate for the wide range of ages served at Music To Grow On. Guitar, piano, and voice proficiency is required.
  • Singing and Accompanying Ability: It is essential that the intern have the ability to sing both acapella and accompanied in an appropriate range for the clientele. Interns will be incorporating percussion instruments as well.
  • Written and Verbal Skills: Strong written and verbal skills are highly recommended and important for success in this internship environment.
  • Reliable Transportation: Due to the mobility of the business, interns are required to have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel between sessions.

INTERNSHIP INTERVIEW

Internship applicants are strongly encouraged to schedule an in-person meeting for the interview, to meet staff, and observe the nature of the company. This allows the applicant and Music To Grow On to ensure a good fit between intern and supervisors. Accommodations can be made for applicants who are unable to meet in person due to schedule and financial difficulties.

PLEASE NOTE

Internship applicants need to have acquired all competency-based prerequisites for internship (including both coursework completion and clinical experience) required by both your AMTA approved college/university and the internship program, prior to beginning the internship.

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

Please note: Music To Grow On is now accepting applications for:

  • Start date of September 2025 (application due by December 31, 2024)
  • Start date of January 2026 (application due by June 30, 2025)

Internship start dates ARE flexible, and specific start dates will be established upon acceptance to the internship.  Application deadlines are firm.

In addition to the application form, please submit the following by the deadline:

✔ Official transcript(s) from each university/college attended (transcripts can be sent to PO Box 980743, West Sacramento, California 95798)

✔ Academic Director’s letter of recommendation should include a statement of competency strengths and areas of need.

✔ Two additional letters of recommendation

✔ An interview scheduled with the internship director

✔ The essay question responses (listed below)

✔ Video submission answering prompts (listed below)

Please submit a written response to the following questions: 

  • Why would you like to complete an internship at Music To Grow On?
  • What do you hope to gain from your internship experience?
  • What skills do you possess that you feel best suit you in becoming a music therapist?
  • Describe your experiences in leading individual interventions, working with other professionals/disciplines, and communicating verbally and written. Include explanation of clinical competency strengths and needs.
  • Describe Music Therapy to a parent of a child with special needs.

Please prepare and submit videos based on the following simulations: 

Applicants need to prepare videos of mock/simulated music therapy interventions, accompanied by guitar and/or piano. Due to privacy, please do not include videos of work with actual clients. Applicants are required to also provide a list of goals and objectives that are to be addressed by each.

PLEASE NOTE: We are looking for outside-the-box thinking and unusual or unique songs.

  1. Preschool aged client working on speech development
  2. Young school aged client working on number, letter, beginning reading, or color recognition
  3. Middle school aged client with moderate to severe disabilities working on participation and interaction.
  4. Young adult aged client working on independent living skills.
  5. Adult with dual diagnoses (intellectual disability and mental health) working on instrument play to continue use of fine and gross motor skills.
  6. Senior adult in memory care working on engagement and participation in a group.
